About this job
Our company needs a part-time Hiker to move vehicles between its Indianapolis, IN location and customer sites. You'll mainly drive box trucks up to 26 feet, and if you hold a CDL Class A, you may also move tractors and trailers. Hours run anywhere from 0 to 25 per week depending on business need, making this a good fit for supplemental income.
What you'll do
- Drive trucks safely between Penske locations and customer sites
- Inspect vehicles for mechanical issues or safety concerns and report problems to the location manager
- Collect signatures, receipts or payment when a delivery calls for it
- Report any accidents, traffic violations, defects or damage involving the vehicles
- Help the service department deliver parts and equipment, and take on other tasks as assigned
Schedule
This is a casual, on-call, part-time role with flexible hours based on demand, from 0 up to 25 hours a week.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of driving experience
- A clean motor vehicle record for the past 2 years
- Valid Class B CDL, with U.S. domicile and licensing in your state of residence (Class A CDL is a plus)
- Able to read and follow written instructions, work independently, and bring solid customer service and organizational skills
- English language proficiency, as required under 49 C.F.R. 391.11(b)(2)
- Reliable, consistent attendance
- Willingness to travel as needed, work required hours and locations, and complete Penske's application, background check and drug screening
Because this role is DOT-regulated, you'll need to maintain a current driver qualification file, which includes an annual MVR check, a completed DOT physical, and safety performance history from employers over the past 3 years. CDL holders will also undergo a DOT drug screening within 30 days of starting and are subject to FMCSA Clearinghouse review.
The work involves regular standing, walking, sitting, and use of your hands and arms, along with the ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs occasionally. You'll need to safely and frequently get in and out of the vehicle and its cargo area, and maintain a constant state of alertness since this is a safety-sensitive position.
