CDL-A Driver Apprentice (City P&D) — $27.26–$32.47/hr

Our company is hiring a City Driver Apprentice in Nichols, NY. You'll learn to run a tractor-trailer combination through training and hands-on driving practice, while also handling dock and forklift work. Pay runs $27.26 to $32.47 an hour.

Pay

What you'll do

• Drive tractor-trailer combinations, including doubles and straight trucks

• Inspect your equipment before, during and after trips

• Couple and uncouple trailers and converter dollies

• Load, secure and move freight using a forklift, pallet jack and hand truck, and repair damaged freight when needed

• Complete paperwork, collect payment checks for freight charges and stay in touch with dispatch

• Work with customers on pickup and delivery needs and pass along sales leads

• Follow hazmat rules and confirm placards match the shipments when required

• Put chains on tires when conditions call for it

Requirements

• A Class A CDL, or a commercial learning permit, before you start in this role

• A motor vehicle record that meets hiring standards and DOT rules under section 391 of the federal motor carrier regulations

• Basic math, reading, writing and speaking skills

• Comfortable hooking up trailers (about 100 pounds of lift force, several times a day) and lifting freight up to 100 pounds several times a week

• Able to sit for long stretches, bend, twist, squat and climb in and out of the truck

• Willing to finish required training and work alone or on a team

Working conditions

• Day and night driving on all road types and in all weather

• Noise, vibration, dust, diesel fumes and exposure to packaged hazardous materials

• Hours can shift with operational needs
