CDL-A Driver Apprentice — City — $27.26/hr

Our company is looking for a Driver Apprentice in the Pocono Summit, PA area to learn tractor-trailer operation while also handling dock and forklift work. This is a training role that builds toward full driving duties.

Pay

• Starting rate of $27.26 per hour

What you'll do

You'll train to safely operate tractor-trailer rigs, including doubles and straight trucks, while also pitching in on non-driving tasks like dock work and forklift operation. Day-to-day duties include:

• Running pre-trip, post-trip and inter-trip inspections on your equipment

• Connecting and disconnecting trailers and converter dollies

• Loading and securing freight with pallets, straps, rope, pallet jacks, hand trucks and forklifts

• Fixing or recouping damaged freight as needed

• Filling out required paperwork and reports, including collecting payment for freight charges when applicable

• Following hazmat rules and making sure placards match the shipment

• Staying in contact with Dispatch about delays, arrivals, equipment issues and similar updates

• Interacting with customers on pickup and delivery needs, and passing along potential sales leads

• Filling in as a road driver or freight handler when the operation needs it

• Chaining tires when conditions call for it

• Following all relevant laws, regulations and company policy

Requirements

• Class A CDL or commercial learner's permit (CLP) before starting in this role

• Clean enough driving record to meet company hiring standards

• Must satisfy DOT qualification rules under FMCSA Part 391

• Comfortable with basic math and counting, calculator allowed

• Basic reading, writing and speaking skills

• Able to hook and unhook trailer sets requiring roughly 100 pounds of lift force multiple times per day

• Able to lift and carry freight up to 100 pounds several times a week

• Able to sit for long stretches and to bend, twist, squat and climb in and out of a truck cab

• Able to follow directions and finish all required training

• Comfortable working solo or as part of a team

Working conditions

Expect to drive both day and night, in all kinds of weather and road conditions. The job involves noise, vibration, dust, diesel exhaust and exposure to hazardous materials handled under DOT rules. Schedules can shift based on operational needs.
