About this job
Our company is looking for a Driver Apprentice in Valdosta, GA to learn tractor-trailer operation while also working dock and forklift duties. This is a training role that builds toward full driving responsibilities.
Pay
- Starting rate is $24.42 per hour
What you'll do
- Learn to operate tractor-trailer combinations, including doubles and straight trucks
- Complete pre-trip, post-trip and inter-trip inspections on equipment
- Connect and disconnect trailers and converter dollies
- Load, unload and secure freight using forklifts, pallet jacks, hand trucks, straps, pallets and rope
- Fix or repack damaged freight as needed
- Fill out required paperwork and reports, and collect payment for freight charges when required
- Follow hazmat rules and confirm placards match shipments
- Stay in contact with Dispatch about delays, arrivals and equipment issues
- Interact with customers on pickup and delivery needs, provide good service, and pass along sales leads when opportunities arise
- Fill in as a road driver or freight handler when the operation needs it
- Chain tires when conditions call for it
- Follow all applicable laws, regulations and company policies
Requirements
- Class A CDL or commercial learner's permit before starting in this role
- Clean enough motor vehicle record to meet hiring standards
- Must meet DOT qualification requirements under FMCSA Part 391
- Comfortable with basic math, with or without a calculator
- Basic reading, writing and verbal communication skills
- Able to connect/disconnect trailer sets requiring about 100 pounds of lift force multiple times a day
- Able to lift and carry freight up to 100 pounds several times a week
- Able to sit for long stretches, and to bend, twist, squat and climb in and out of a truck
- Able to follow directions and complete required training
- Comfortable working solo or as part of a team
Working conditions
- Driving happens day and night, in all kinds of weather and on all road types
- Exposure to noise, vibration, dust and diesel fumes
- Exposure to hazardous materials shipped under DOT rules
- Schedule and hours can shift based on operational needs
