About this job

Our company, a locally owned carrier in the Ottawa/Gatineau area, is hiring AZ licensed drivers to haul petroleum products like liquid asphalt, jet fuel, ethanol, gas and diesel. You'll run between refineries, terminals, bulk plants, gas stations and construction sites across eastern Ontario and western Quebec, using the company's own equipment.

The work

Two types of routes are available:

  • Asphalt hauling (OTR): You stay with your sleeper-equipped tractor all week before returning to base. The Tuesday-to-Saturday schedule runs 40-60 hours weekly depending on customer demand, with shift start times set day to day by dispatch. One Monday-to-Friday opening also exists, though it may occasionally start very early Sunday or finish Saturday morning.
  • Gas, diesel, jet fuel and ethanol hauling: Schedules and start times vary and are worked out with your dispatcher. Most weeks include Saturday and Sunday, or Saturday only. Drivers on this side typically get home each day after their shift.

Day to day, you'll handle pre-trip and post-trip inspections, keep accurate electronic (and backup paper) logs, submit paperwork through a phone app, report any equipment problems, and follow Transportation of Dangerous Goods rules and PPE requirements. You're expected to show up on time, keep your truck clean, and stay professional with dispatch, coworkers and customers.

Pay

Starting wage is $29.00 per hour for a quad configuration, for drivers without direct experience hauling asphalt or ethanol and not yet carded at the various facilities. This rate can be adjusted based on your experience, skill level and ability to run a b-train - that gets worked out with the hiring manager.

Requirements

  • AZ license from a recognized driving school
  • Comfortable with both manual and automatic transmissions (preferred)
  • A clean driving abstract and a valid CVOR certificate
  • Able to meet the medical and vision standards for AZ operation
  • A team-oriented, positive attitude and awareness of workplace safety
  • Tanker experience (tandems, quads, b-trains) is a plus but not required
  • Comfortable with electronic logging (Qtracs, Motive) and paper logs is strongly preferred
  • English communication required; French or bilingual ability is an asset
  • Basic mechanical know-how is strongly preferred - things like locating the starter, fuse box and radiator hoses, checking and topping up fluids, purging air systems, caging an air brake chamber, splicing wires, or swapping a wiper blade. You'll need to carry your own basic tool kit (flashlight, tire gauge, pliers, screwdrivers, wrenches, small sledgehammer, utility knife, electrical tape, small crowbar, etc.) for roadside fixes; the company supplies spare fuses, zip ties and hose clamps on request.
  • A cell phone that can send texts, emails and photos
  • Able to lift 14 to 22 kilograms
  • Must currently live in the greater Ottawa/Gatineau region

Benefits

  • Paid training, including getting carded at the various terminals and plants
  • Boot allowance
  • An operating bonus tied to punctuality, clean paperwork, a tidy cab, PPE compliance, a clean driving record and proper equipment parking and circle checks
  • Health coverage including vision, dental and prescription drugs
  • Free on-site parking, plus shower and change facilities
  • Standard PPE provided
  • Casual dress code

This is a full-time position. Our company is an equal opportunity employer.
