CDL-A Lead Driver — $75,000–$100,000/yr

Our company in Carol Stream, IL is looking for an experienced Class A driver to help run their FedEx Ground operation as a lead. This role mixes actual driving with dispatch support, fleet oversight, and some payroll and timekeeping duties.

What you'll do

• Drive Class A equipment and step in to cover shifts, absences, or staffing gaps as needed

• Set the tone for safety, punctuality and accountability, and coach other drivers on performance

• Help train new hires and keep operating practices consistent across the team

• Assist with dispatch, driver scheduling and tracking routes from departure to arrival

• Communicate with drivers, terminal staff and management to sort out delays or service problems

• Inspect trucks, catch mechanical issues early, and handle basic troubleshooting or minor repairs within your skill level

• Coordinate bigger repairs and preventive maintenance with management and outside shops

• Check driver hours and timekeeping entries for accuracy and help prepare payroll

• Keep records on maintenance, safety issues and driver follow-up

Schedule and travel

Your hours will shift based on operational needs, so expect early mornings, nights, weekends, long days and some unpredictability, including possible overnight or 24+ hour team coverage. You'll travel locally each week across the Chicagoland area, moving between Carol Stream, Romeoville, Bedford Park and Hammond, IN, with monthly trips out to Fort Wayne, IN and/or Detroit, MI as needed. If you use your own vehicle for approved business travel, mileage is reimbursed per company policy.

Requirements

• Valid Class A CDL

• At least 3 years of Class A driving experience

• Prior experience as a supervisor, manager or lead driver

• Working mechanical knowledge, with hands-on experience troubleshooting or doing minor repairs on diesel trucks

• Solid leadership, communication and organizational abilities

• Comfortable juggling driving duties alongside management tasks

• Open schedule, able to cover varying shifts and meet the travel requirements above

• Familiarity with dispatch, timekeeping, payroll or fleet management systems

• Must meet standard driver qualification and hiring requirements

Preferred

• FedEx Ground driving or operations background

• Experience with linehaul dispatch, terminal procedures or coordinating drivers

• Background in fleet maintenance coordination or reviewing payroll/timekeeping

Pay

$75,000.00 to $100,000.00 per year
