About this job
Our company is hiring a city pickup-and-delivery driver in Rapid City, SD. You will move freight between service centers and customers, running tractor-trailer combinations (including doubles and triples where applicable) or straight trucks, and help bring in new business.
Pay
- Starting rate is $31.32 per hour.
What you'll do
- Inspect your equipment before each shift for safety.
- Couple and uncouple trailers and converter dollies.
- Load, unload and secure freight using forklifts, pallet jacks, hand trucks, straps and rope; repair damaged freight when needed.
- Handle shipping paperwork, follow hazmat rules, and take payment for freight charges when required.
- Stay in touch with dispatch about delays, arrivals and equipment issues, and talk with customers about their pickup and delivery needs.
- Pass sales leads along and ask customers for more business.
- You may need to chain tires, or step in as a road driver or dock worker when operations call for it.
Requirements
- Class A CDL with doubles/triples, hazmat and tank endorsements (an automatic-transmission restriction is acceptable). The hazmat endorsement must be earned within 120 days of accepting an offer, and you cannot drive a commercial vehicle without it.
- One year of driving experience in the past three years, or completion of the our company Driver Development Course.
- Acceptable motor vehicle record and compliance with DOT rules under section 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier regulations.
- South Dakota is an LCV state, so drivers there must meet the Long Combination Vehicle qualification and certification standards.
- Able to lift and carry up to 100 pounds several times a week, sit for long stretches, bend, twist, squat and climb in and out of the truck.
- Basic math, reading and communication skills, and comfortable working alone or on a team.
Working conditions
- Driving all shift on any road in any weather, with noise, vibration, dust, diesel fumes and exposure to hazardous materials.
- Hours can vary with operational needs.
