About this job

Our company, a family-owned carrier operating since 1945 out of Kentville, NS, is looking for Class 1 drivers for long-haul, cross-border runs hauling dry and temperature-controlled freight across Canada and the United States. This is permanent, full-time work with shifts that can fall on days, evenings, nights, or weekends.

Pay

  • Drivers with one year of experience earn $0.48 per mile, with weekly pay and overtime included.
  • Expect around 2,500 miles per week, with annual earnings ranging from $60,000 to $86,000 (negotiable), based on 40 to 50 hours per week.
  • Extra pick-up and drop-off stops are paid separately.
  • A current pay grid (November 2024) is available directly from Eassons.
  • New Class 1 drivers and those working toward their Class 1 license can contact Eassons to ask about training options.

What you'll haul

  • Refrigerated and dry freight moved by tractor-trailer, both TL and LTL, across Canadian provinces and into the U.S.
  • Some runs are solo long-haul; others involve working as part of a two-driver team or in convoy.
  • You'll be responsible for loading and unloading, checking your load and equipment (tires, brakes, lights, cold storage units), and completing pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections.
  • Expect to handle cargo weighing up to 23 kg (50 lbs) and to manage logbooks, bills of lading, trip reports, and cross-border paperwork.

Requirements

  • Class 1 (or Class A) driver's license, with Air Brake (Z) endorsement.
  • At least 1 year but less than 2 years of relevant driving experience.
  • Comfortable driving manual transmission vehicles; some late-model trucks offer auto-shift.
  • Valid passport and willingness to travel cross-border, overnight, and for extended periods.
  • Must pass a basic security clearance, criminal record check, driving record check, and drug test.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; WHMIS certificate, defensive driving course, forklift certification, and professional driver improvement certificate are assets.
  • Strong attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team; role involves prolonged sitting and physical demands.
  • You'll need your own cell phone and steel-toed safety boots.

Benefits

  • Health coverage starting immediately, including dental, vision, paramedical services, and disability benefits.
  • Life insurance and long-term care insurance included in the group plan.
  • Free 24-hour virtual health care access.
  • Recognition and wellness programs, including a bonus for a Clean Level-1 Inspection.
  • Mileage-based pay plus piece-work compensation.
  • Support from an experienced dispatch and operations team around the clock.
